Problem

Many families struggle to access fresh, nutritious food because of transportation barriers, limited grocery options, and restrictive assistance programs that overlook personal and cultural needs.

Opportunity

Design a food delivery system that meets people where they are and connects them to fresh, culturally relevant meals through both physical and digital access points.

Overview

Fresca is a local food delivery service designed to make access simple and stigma-free. In partnership with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, it provides fresh foods that reflect users’ cultural and dietary needs. Deliveries arrive at home or at community lockers, reducing transportation barriers and keeping healthy food within reach.

Target Users & Insights

Accessing healthy food can be tough for people facing barriers like limited transportation or changing income. Many rely on community organizations but still want more control and privacy. My research showed that convenience, cultural familiarity, and dignity are just as important as nutrition. These insights shaped Fresca’s hybrid system of mail-in checklists, digital ordering, and community lockers.

Designing Fresca taught me the importance of accessibility beyond technology. Food insecurity isn’t just a resource problem, it’s a systems problem tied to transportation, income, and digital access. By blending analog and digital tools, I learned how design can create equity through simplicity and care. Fresca showed me that designing for dignity means meeting people where they are, and that thoughtful systems design can restore a sense of autonomy in essential, everyday experiences.
